Cathechists (Photo of Catechists’ Retreat?)

“The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch, but also in
communion and intimacy, with Jesus Christ.” (CCC 426)

“It is necessary for catechists to have a deep faith, a clear Christian and ecclesial identity [and] a great social sensitivity.” As such, each catechist must be living in full communion with the Catholic Church.
Formation: Mystagogy for catechists this year will be six hours of classes in the ancient prayer form of Lectio Divina. (Mystagogy is life-long post-baptismal catechesis.)

Virtus Training

All catechists and aids, as well as all volunteers of any age, are required to attend a training in Safe Environments. The Diocese of Las Cruces has adopted Virtus as the new training program beginning in the fall, 2016. Anyone who has been previously trained in Virtus from any parish or diocese will not be required to renew certification for five years from the date of their certification. Visit to register.

Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church (hot link to the Oath)

On Catechetical Sunday, each catechist will stand before the pastor and the congregation to profess his/her oath of fidelity to the Magisterium. Father will bless all catechists as we begin the year forming our students in the knowledge of the faith, in liturgical engagement, in moral formation, in a deepened prayer life, in commitment to community and in missionary initiative. (The Magisterium is the teaching arm of the Church, made up of the bishops in union with the pope.)

I, Arlean Murillo, a catechist of St. John Paul II Parish, with firm faith believe and profess everything that is contained in the Symbol of faith, namely:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

With firm faith, I also believe everything contained in the Word of God, whether written or handed down in sacred Tradition, which the Magisterium sets forth to be believed as divinely revealed. I also firmly accept and hold everything definitively proposed by the Church regarding teaching on faith and morals. Moreover, I adhere with religious submission of will and intellect to the teachings, which either the Roman pontiff or the College of Bishops enunciates when they exercise their authentic Magisterium.

In assuming the role of catechist, I promise that in my words and actions I shall always preserve communion with the Catholic Church. I shall carry out the duties incumbent on me toward the Church. I shall hold fast to the deposit of faith in its entirety and hand it on and explain it avoiding any teachings contrary to it.
So help me God, and God’s Holy Gospels upon which I place my hand.
